Mega Western Sales began as the Crosby-Lindsey agency back in 1970. Dave Dempsey has been a part of the agency nearly that whole time and eventually coordinated the buy-out of the original partners, forming Great Western Sales. Dempsey having 40 years in the industry began his career with a plumbing firm before joining C-L in the early 1970’s. The 1990’s brought the agency into the retail segment of the business, and when they bought out the retail sales agency of Mega Marketing, the agency adopted the name Mega Western Sales. The agency exited the retail segment however in 2001 and focuses exclusively on the trade segments of the business today. Mike Smith came on board and joined Mega Western Sales in 1995 from a national sales position with a faucet manufacturer. Smith’s background includes positions with a large rep firm beginning in 1975; a Texas based plumbing contractor and two manufacturers within the industry.
The early years had Mega Western Sales representing mostly shelf lines with primary focus on distributor and contractor calls, but the emphasis has shifted over thirty years to include more finish goods and the need to include a variety of customer types to influence demand. Although the portfolio of products changed, the company’s core mission of “more calls…on more customers…more often” has not changed. Mega Western now employs a variety of market specialists to address the specific needs of the builder, showroom, commercial and hospitality business segments.
With Mega Western’s shift to commercial business and specifiers, they have a need to bring more core commercial lines to their portfolio. The primary advantage a drain line brings is visibility to more jobs at an earlier stage in development, so that they can attempt to convert the total plumbing spec to the products they represent. The job leads Mega Western gets from Josam Company have helped them to grow their total business in some otherwise difficult market conditions.
Another way Mega Western is growing their business is they hired full time drain “specialists” for outside sales and assigned an inside sales “line captain” to oversee Josam jobs and act as a liaison to the rest of field sales for their technical questions and general support. Mega Western and their staff placed more emphasis on Mechanical Contractors and Engineers. They beefed up their quotations department to better manage job take-offs and submittals and track results.
Mega Western Sales and their staff recognize the product quality, breadth of line and availability (on time deliveries) as critical selling advantages of Josam products. Of course, Josam Company’s reputation and the fact that many specifications exist from their work prior to our taking on the line are huge advantages.
Finally, and certainly NOT of least importance, is the dedication to bringing innovative products like the Pro-Plus line of trench drain systems and now Loro to the family of products.
Mega Western Sales is diversified in business and has lots of industry experience both inside and out. Their business model is to address ALL customer types that would have an influence on the sale or specification of the products in their line portfolio. While their “specialist” approach is expensive and depends on a thriving market place to afford, Mega Western has found it to be the most effective way to grow market share. The current market is hampering their ability to “feed the machine” but they remain dedicated to the concept and will fund it to the best of their ability throughout this period.
